Policy Actions taken this year

The NAMEN Policy Advocacy Committee has four primary goals: 

1. Develop and maintain policy advocacy efforts for NAMEN;
2. Provide a voice for men and organizations to collectively support national (in the U.S. and Canada) and global efforts to advance gender equality and women's and girl’s human rights;
3. Develop the capacity of male engagement practitioners and organizations to engage in policy advocacy at the local, state/provincial and national levels, grounded in male accountability and promoting gender equality; and
4. Develop evidence-based and gender-transformative resources and model policies that:
   • Address structural inequalities,
     
   • Promote gender equality and  human rights of women and girls,
     
   • Clearly address and position the roles of male-identified individuals in  promoting gender equality, and/or
     
   • Support male engagement practitioners and effort to support and promote women's and girl’s human rights.

Policy Statements and Actions in year 2020

1. Signed Letter to Congress regarding Public Health actions impacting Domestic Violence Survivors
March 19, 2020

The Coronavirus not only is a general health pandemic, but early indications are that it is also deeply effecting rape and domestic violence.  The National Domestic Violence Hotline, in the US, for example, has reported a significant spike in Hotline calls in the past 6 weeks. the Virus is also deeply effecting domestic violence shelters, other services and state coalitions in unprecedented ways. 

As you all are undoubtedly aware, the US Congress is also debating an emergency spending bill to provide trillions of dollars in support to businesses and individuals. A leading group of feminist advocacy organizations drafted a letter, which NAMEN was invited to sign onto, urging Congress to include funding to support rape crisis center, domestic violence agencies, and coalitions to respond to the needs presented by this crisis.
